Content Delivery
The instructor will instruct students to turn to Chapter 12 Section 1 “Americans Struggle with Postwar Issues.” The class will be divided into small groups of three students, and each will be assigned one of the issues covered in the chapter (First Red Scare, Immigration, Labor). Each group will then be directed to read the section in the chapter that covers their issue.
Student Engagement
The instructor will hand out paper for the students to create a three-column foldable which will serve as a pamphlet. Each group will also be given an image representing the section they finished reading. Students will be tasked with creating a pamphlet warning the American people about the dangers of Communism/Anarchy, Immigration, or Labor Unrest. Students must mention: what is the issue? Who is involved? What can Americans do to help out? This can be done either manually, or if access to computer labs is possible, via Microsoft Publisher.
Lesson Closure
Students will complete an exit slip asking them to name one thing they learned from the day’s lesson, and also turn in their pamphlets if done in class (may be extended out into a small multi day project if necessary)
Assessment
Formative: Students will collaborate to create their pamphlet project and the instructor will monitor discussions throughout the room.
Summative: Instructor will collect pamphlets and exit slips, which will assess knowledge gained and can inform re-teaching.
