A book of faces!
Culminating Project
Students will work in groups of three to create a mock Facebook page for a notable historical figure from the 1920’s. They may be anyone: politicians, athletes, entertainers, artists, etc. as long as they had some notable achievement during the years 1920-1929.
Each student will write a short topic proposal, which includes the name of your chosen individual and why you feel they are significant enough to do your project on. Your proposal must be more detailed than “because I like x person” or “because I thought it sounded cool.” You need to explain why researching the life of this individual will offer you an insight into the 1920’s. You must also give me the name of one primary source document that you can use for the project
Students will create a mock Facebook page which includes a picture of the individual, a timeline of at least four important lifetime events, an “about me” section, a “friends” section including at least two friends, and at least three “wall posts.” Students have the option to create a digital version, or a physical version on a poster board.
Instructions:
Students will utilize at least three different sources for their project. At least one must be a primary source document. Remember, I am letting you choose your topic, so it must be someone who you can find at least one primary source document about. This is also a collaborative group project, so you will need to make sure that your group partners have access to your sources (make sure to share them with your teammates).
The “about me” section should include their years, hometown, place of education (if known), any awards and/or honors, and relationship status (optional, but it sure wouldn’t feel like a Facebook page otherwise). You should also choose a profile image for your individual that gives a good representation of who they were.
For your timeline events, try to pick out significant happenings in the person’s life that occurred during the 1920’s. Since your about me will already include birthdate, it should not be one of your timeline events. If an event happened earlier in a person’s life that contributed towards an event that happened during the 20’s, feel free to include that.
For the wall posts, again, use significant events in your figure’s life that happened during the 1920’s. The difference between these posts and your timeline is you must not only include the date, but also try to include the place, and write an “in character” post from your historical figure about the event. Imagine that you are them at that time. You may also use a quote from a primary source in your wall posts.
Projects will be completed either online on Padlet or a similar digital poster program, or they may be done on a physical poster board. Students will give a short presentation of their finished product to the class.
You must include a Works Cited page that lists all the sources you consulted for your project.
